How To ENABLE / DISABLE The Num Lock Key

Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista & Win7 can adjust Windows handles the Num Lock status by editing the Windows registry. See our registry section for additional information about the Windows registry and potential problems that may occur if edited improperly.

  1. Click Start -> Run, and type regedit to open the Windows registry editor.
  2. In the registry, open the below folders. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\
  3. Within the keyboard folder, you should have a string value named "InitialKeyboardIndicators" with a value of 0, 1, or 2. Below is the explanation of each of these values.






















0 = Num Lock is turned OFF after the logon.

1 = Disable Num Lock.

2 = Numlock is turned ON after the logon.

Disabling the Automatic Restart in Windows XP

Windows XP is programmed by default to restart immediately after a major error, like one that causes a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). This reboot happens too fast to record the error message for use in troubleshooting.

Follow these easy steps to disable the automatic restart feature for system failures in Windows XP.

  1. Click Start, right click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
  3. Click to clear the Automatically restart check box, click OK, and then click OK again.
  4. Restart the computer. When you attempt to shut down the computer, the exact message should be displayed.
From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot. Rebooting manually will be necessary.
